Abstract

Additive manufacturing (AM) is growing at a rapid pace with the advancements in efforts to address the sustainability and climate change. Researchers around the world are seeking to improve the two fundamental aspects of additive manufacturing namely: speed and accuracy. By increasing the speed of fabrication, AM is all set to take over the major chunk of conventional manufacturing by the end of this century. While AM has developed from its initial stage of prototyping to industrial production, integration of non-destructive evaluation NDE becomes inevitable. NDE being able to inspect the AM fabricated products for its defects and accuracy, is necessary in production line to ensure the quality of the product meets the required standards. This paper gives an insight into the integration of NDE techniques into the various AM processes to accustom the mass production and batch production. The NDE techniques are classified into in-situ and ex-situ examinations, and conceptual design is drawn accordingly. Furthermore, the advantages of NDE in the additive manufacturing of composites are discussed in detail. AM fabricated composites are often dealt with interface delamination, defects, porosity, and adhesive issues which needs to be carefully addressed. While various kinds of composites do exist, the fabrication of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) and nanocomposites through AM is recently developed. Thus, the study mainly focuses on recent involvement of NDE in assessing the quality of AM fabricated CMCs and nanocomposites.
