Abstract
Magnetic Barkhausen emissions (MBE) was carried out on standard impact specimens of 410 martensitic stainless steel shaft, subjected to quench and tempering heat treatment for the NDE by magnetic technique. The RMS voltage of the MBE was correlated with the hardness and impact energy. It was found that there is a drastic drop in impact energy between 200-500oC along with the RMS and Peak voltage, due to the
pinning of the magnetic domains by the martensitic phase in addition to the precipitates and segregations at the grain boundaries. Above 500 oC, the impact energy, the RMS voltage and the Peak voltage increased due to the easy magnetic domain wall movement. A strong correlation was found between the RMS voltage of the MBE and the impact energy and hardness. This correlation indicates that the MBE technique is a
potential tool for the evaluation of embrittlement in 410 martensitic stainless steel.
