Abstract

Residential apartments in a township near to coast of Bay of Bengal, were investigated for cause of severe distress in the form of concrete spallation, cracking, and settlement. The houses were inundated during Tsunami in 2004.Condition assessment of the buildings was performed through visual inspection, non destructive tests and chemical analysis. The structural audit conducted revals that the electrochemical corrosion initiated due to tsunami water stagnation has further progressed under severe coastal exposure. The paper discusses the cause and extent of damage in structural elements of the apartments and also indicates that the housing units are in precarious condition.
